UYUNI SALT FLATS
The Salt Flats of Uyuni or of Thunupa with its 12000 km² is the greatest salt desert of the world – it is estimated that it contains about 64 thousand million tons of salt-, it is one of the biggest lithium reserves of the world and it is located at about 3650 masl in the city of Potosi, in Bolivia’s altiplano.
The Salt Flats of Uyuni was formed because of the evaporation of ancient seas that immersed the American continent: imagine a white sea, so big that goes to the horizon and beyond. This is precisely what Uyuni Salt Flats is about, what makes it the main reason tourists find to travel to Bolivia.
Among the main attractions of Uyuni Salt Flats, we find Incahuasi Island, wrongfully known as Fish Island (actually they are two different islands, separated by 21 km of salt). It’s an earth and rock mound that emerges from the “white sea” and contains a true ecosystem with its own fauna and flora, among which the cactus more than eight meter high stand out. From the island one can enjoy a unique view of Uyuni Salt Flats only comparable with polar regions, where the blue and white merge as a mirage without limits or horizon.
